“The Champ’s” Top 5 Stories from Week 8

•November 7, 2009 • Leave a Comment

5. Ravens get back on track shut down undefeated Broncos:

The Baltimore Ravens were finally the first team to defeat the Denver Broncos this season. If you had asked me if I’d be writing those words in Week 8 I’d bet the house that the Broncos being undefeated would never happen. For what it’s worth it has been a fun and exciting story in the NFL to watch a team NO ONE thought would do well, do amazing. The 2nd half story this season for the Broncos will be whether or not they can keep playing the way they did in the first half of the season.

As for the Ravens they needed this win badly to show that they can contend in the AFC. The runner ups in last years AFC Championship game has been stumbling as of late and huge win over an undefeated team convincingly is a great motivational point for a team heading into the 2nd half. It was only a matter of time before the Ravens got back on track this season and it appears that will make another strong run in the AFC race in the 2nd half of the season.

4. Philly blows the Giants out of the water:

The Giants struggles continued this week after losing their third straight game against a divisional rival in a pivotal early NFC East matchup. Besides the fact that the Giants gave the Eagles the divisional lead in this game, they gave it to them in literally the first quarter! This one time feared defense is a shell of its old self being blown out 40-17. This is the 2nd time in three weeks where the Giants defense has given up forty or more points on Sunday. The Giants are in big trouble and are barely keeping their heads afloat.

While on the other side of the ball the Philadelphia Eagles looked great, their offense obviously clicked and their defense shut them down. One of the most up and down franchises in football for the last seven years continues to have a great game one week and lose to the Oakland Raiders the next. Hopefully for Eagles fans this is a turn in the right direction as I don’t see anyone contending with them for the NFC East crown as we approach the final weeks of regular season football. Sorry Dallas.

3. Is that really Vince Young?

That was the question that left most NFL fans and Tennessee fans asking themselves once Week 8 concluded. After finally getting the nod at starting QB for the winless Tennessee Titans he goes 15/18 125 yards 1 TD and leading them to their first victory of the season over the Jacksonville Jaguars. If VY can hold true to what was projected of him not to long ago then this will become one of the “feel good” stories of the NFL next to the Denver Broncos 1st half of the season.

VY was a protégé of the late Steve McNair and how fitting is it that he could one day be leading this team to greatness like McNair once did. While it may be too soon to start putting VY in the same category of McNair, Titans fans are hoping that is the case. VY projected that his is a “future hall-of-famer” and hopefully he can prove all of us wrong his projection. Great to see one of the most touted QBs in a long time heading into the NFL Draft get a 2nd chance and proving everyone why he was a first round pick.

2. The Colts and Saints are the last of the undefeated:

The Indianapolis Colts had a scare Sunday when the San Francisco 49ers stayed in the game and just beat them by 4 points. Peyton Manning and the Colts improve the 7-0 on the season becoming the odds on favorite in the AFC this season. This once again appears the same song and dance for the Indianapolis Colts and it’s kind of sad to see that no one mentions first year coach Jim Caldwell starting his coaching career undefeated. But everyone expects the Colts to do it time and time again.

While the Colts stand atop the AFC the team atop the NFC is the New Orleans Saints. The Saints defeated division rival Atlanta Falcons on Monday Night Football in an awesome game to watch for any football fan. Like I have said before Drew Brees is without a doubt the NFL MVP front runner right now. They are healthy, they are dangerous on both sides of the ball and if they lose more then two games this season I will be surprised. This is without a doubt the team to beat in the NFL.

1. Brett Favre returns to Lambeau Field:

Does this really come as a shock? The four letter network reminded us time and time again that Brett Favre was returning to Green Bay, FOX reminded us DURING the World Series that Favre was returning to Green Bay AND if Favre had a twitter page I’m sure he’d remind us to. But for what its worth this game did live up to the hype on Sunday as these two NFC North rivals put on a great matchup in Week 8.

The Vikings may be the 2nd best team in the NFC but just outside the Top 7 of teams in the NFL. While they are an all around good team they still have a 40 year old QB leading them. I know I sound like a broken record but let’s not forget about that when talking about the Minnesota Vikings. I didn’t think Favre would start every game this season whether it is because they are already in the playoffs or he’s injured.

As for the Green Bay Packers you can’t say enough for the way Aaron Rodgers played. He once again played one of his best games of the season and let it all hang out on the national spotlight. This Packers team is young and still learning; while I still think they will make the playoffs I believe that they could be a surprise team to be dominant in 2010.
